My second day in Sutrena dawned. I’d been nervous about sleeping in the same bed as Lord Nazel, but morning came without anything in particular happening.

“Lord Nazel was sleeping next to me, but now I don’t see him anywhere.”

He must have already gotten up, because the only traces of him left were the wrinkled sheets.

“I...didn’t oversleep, did I?”

Kelly got my clothes ready for me, and when I asked where Lord Nazel was, she told me he’d already headed out. I hadn’t overslept, he’d just gotten up really early and was apparently now working with Mister Henry at the fortress.

“All right, I have to work hard too!” As the lord’s wife, my job was to manage the household. “First, I need to get a good grasp on the entire estate, and hire more help since you seem to be the only one here. Hold on, isn’t it strange that there’s no one else?!” This situation was ridiculous.

“It seems that no one showed interest when they tried to recruit servants. Working at the margrave’s estate is apparently quite the unpopular job. We might have to raise wages substantially in order to attract people,” the nearby Kelly explained with her usual neutral expression.

“But why?! Working for nobles wasn’t stigmatized in the capital, was it?”

“I’m not familiar with all the specifics of this situation, but it may be related to the previous ruler’s exceedingly poor reputation. I believe we aren’t very welcome either.”

“Really? Is it the previous margrave’s fault?!”

“Most likely. Choosing wyverns as our mounts yesterday was almost certainly a form of harassment. I believe the main intention was to make Lord Nazelbart lose face. After all, many nobles who can ride pegasi do not know how to ride wyverns. Although, even if it was meant as harassment, the wyverns’ speed was incredible, almost intoxicating.” Kelly complained indifferently about Connie’s behavior, but while her tone was calm, I could feel quite a bit of resentment in her words.

I really enjoyed our wyvern ride, but to think it was actually harassment...

I’d been exposed to such intense malice as Lady Bumpkin that I’d failed to even notice this relatively minor affront from Connie.

“I wonder if Lord Nazel is doing okay at work. But I can’t exactly go to bother him at his workplace, so let’s at least clean the inside of the house so he can relax when he returns. Kelly, I will help you clean as much as I can!”

We’d been allotted almost no funds upon coming to the frontier. We had to do our utmost to refrain from wasteful spending now so we would be prepared for future emergencies.

“How admirable of you, Lady Agnes. I shall also work to the best of my ability.”

For starters, Kelly and I went around to examine the large mansion, but it was all in unacceptable condition.

“It’s a full-on display of waste,” I declared.

“Yes, there is too much oversize garbage. Tasteless ornaments, incomprehensible paintings, and furniture with such intricate designs it can’t be used. There’s even an indoor water fountain.
